Saint Lucia is a small tropical island in the Caribbean with a population of around 180,000. Saint Lucia enchants visitors with its lush beauty, cultural richness and warm hospitality. The island is a haven of volcanic origin, with dramatic landscapes and abundant flora and fauna. The capital, Castries, welcomes travellers with colourful markets where local traders display their goods. This is where Saint Lucia’s cultural melting pot unfolds, bringing together African, French and British influences. The scent of exotic spices and fresh fruit hangs in the air, while traditional music fills the streets with a lively atmosphere.
The island is a popular honeymoon destination, but there is more to it than just beaches and resorts. Outside the resorts, many young people have few opportunities to take part in organised sport.
Our foundation tackles these problems through the power of sport, using it as a means to get children and young people on the right track and keep them there. Through sporting activities, we offer them an alternative outlet and teach them important skills such as teamwork, decision-making, leadership and communication. In addition, we also provide swimming lessons because, despite being an island, many children and young people still drown simply because they cannot swim. Furthermore, there is a special ‘Women’s Empowerment’ programme designed to encourage more women to take part in sport.
On the island, you will work closely with the national teams and will be able to call on these international players for the activities you organise. You will work in the local neighbourhoods and at Saint Lucia’s national stadium.

ARRIVAL WEEKENDS
We strongly recommend joining one of the arrival weekends below. On these weekends many volunteers and interns arrive at the same time, and there is an introduction, orientation and icebreaker activities. So it is always better to arrive on one of these Fridays.
It is important that you arrive on a Friday, because an airport pick-up can be arranged then. If you arrive earlier, you can always stay a few days close to the airport and then use the airport pick-up on Friday.

-In Saint Lucia, only breakfast is covered; vegetarian options are also provided here.
What do I need to bear in mind when travelling abroad?
-Following our no-obligation chat, during which we’ll go through a few things, we’ll also send you the ‘welcome pack’, which sets out in detail everything you need to bear in mind, what you need to bring with you, what to watch out for, and so on.
Can I arrive earlier or later than the designated arrival weekend?
– This is possible but strongly discouraged. Not only will you miss the introduction and orientation, but you’ll also be joining an existing, often close-knit group, and it’s always harder to fit in once the group has already formed. If you really can’t arrive any earlier or later, or if the flight is much cheaper, we’d also recommend staying in a hostel for the first few days before moving into our accommodation. Just let us know – we’d be happy to help!
How many other people will I be doing my internship with?
– There are always other interns/volunteers at the accommodation in Saint Lucia. The size of the group varies between 10 and 20. They do not all come from the UK, but from other countries as well. You can contact us to find out how many others will be there during your stay. We’ll also set up a group chat with other Dutch people who’ll be making the trip at the same time. That way, you can get to know each other in advance.

Several sports are popular in Saint Lucia, at both professional and amateur level. Below is an overview of some of the most popular sports in Saint Lucia:

Cricket: cricket is the most popular sport in Saint Lucia. Players from the island represent the West Indies, and there are various cricket competitions and tournaments on the island.

Turing Scheme
Through the Turing Scheme, UK universities, colleges and schools can fund students who take part in a study or internship abroad, including outside Europe. The funding is applied for by your institution, not by you directly.
Ask your study abroad or international office whether your institution takes part and whether our programme qualifies. Visit the Turing Scheme website for the conditions. Make sure you do this well in advance, as institutions work with strict deadlines and gathering the required documents can take a while. A good, timely application also increases your chance of success.
Erasmus+
Other grants
Many universities, colleges and sports bodies offer their own travel grants or bursaries for students who want to spend part of their studies or internship abroad. Availability differs per institution and course.
So always check with your course, personal tutor or international office whether your participation in our project qualifies for such a grant. They can also tell you about the conditions, the application procedure and the amount. It is well worth looking into early, as a grant can make a nice contribution to the cost of your experience abroad.

About Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia is an independent island nation in the eastern Caribbean. The island is part of the Lesser Antilles and lies between Martinique to the north and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south. The capital and largest city is Castries.
The island covers around 617 km² and has a population of around 180,000. The official language is English, and many people also speak Kwéyòl, a French based Creole, but everyone understands English.
Saint Lucia has a tropical climate, with temperatures averaging around 28 degrees Celsius all year round. The island is known for its beautiful natural scenery, including picturesque volcanic mountains, lush rainforests, white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
Saint Lucia has a rich history and culture, with influences from the original inhabitants, European colonists and enslaved Africans. The island has a number of interesting historical sights, including the remains of colonial forts and the town of Soufrière, next to the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its volcanic springs and mineral baths.

Accommodation
In Saint Lucia you stay in a beautiful villa just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, so every day you can enjoy the sun, sand and sea. The villa has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day full of activities. You share your bedroom with one or two other interns or volunteers, a great chance to meet new people and make friends with like minded adventurers from all over the world. The villa is just outside the centre of the capital Castries, a city of 20,000 inhabitants. The location also makes the villa an ideal base for exploring the island, and you can easily take trips to the surrounding sights.
