ABOUT SAINT LUCIA

Saint Lucia, a small yet captivating tropical island in the Caribbean, is home to approximately 180,000 residents and is celebrated for its awe-inspiring natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, and the warm, welcoming spirit of its people. The island’s volcanic origins have sculpted its landscape into a series of dramatic vistas, including lush rainforests, soaring mountain peaks, and the stunning, crystal-clear waters of the surrounding Caribbean Sea, making it a true paradise for tourists and nature lovers alike. The capital city, Castries, serves as the bustling epicenter of the island, where lively markets brim with the vibrant colors and enticing aromas of exotic spices, fresh fruits, and local delicacies. Here, the island’s unique cultural tapestry—woven from African, French, and British influences—comes to life, creating an atmosphere that is both distinctive and enchanting.

Despite its reputation as a premier wedding and vacation destination, Saint Lucia grapples with significant social and economic challenges. Around 26% of the population lives below the poverty line, with the situation being particularly dire in rural areas where high unemployment rates and inadequate access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and clean water exacerbate the hardships. These challenging conditions often leave children and young people especially vulnerable to the influence of gangs, crime, and other negative social forces.

In response to these challenges, our foundation leverages the transformative power of sports to provide a positive outlet for the island’s youth. Through various sports programs, we aim to equip children and young people with essential life skills, including teamwork, decision-making, leadership, and effective communication. One of our cornerstone initiatives involves offering swimming lessons—a critical program given that many children on the island do not know how to swim, despite being surrounded by the ocean. These lessons are not just about recreation; they are vital for preventing drowning and ensuring the safety of young people in and around the water.

Moreover, we are deeply committed to advancing gender equality through our ‘Women Empowerment’ program, which encourages women and girls to actively participate in sports. This initiative is designed to help women develop self-confidence, leadership abilities, and resilience, thereby contributing to their personal growth and increasing their active involvement in the broader community.

As a volunteer in Saint Lucia, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to work closely with the island’s national sports teams, integrating them into the activities you help organize. You will engage directly with communities in underprivileged neighborhoods and at the national stadium, where your efforts will have a tangible impact on the lives of young people who are in critical need of positive guidance and mentorship. Beyond making a difference in the lives of others, this volunteer experience will offer you the chance to grow personally, face new challenges head-on, and fully immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty that Saint Lucia has to offer.

Sports in Saint Lucia

Cricket is by far the most popular sport on the island, deeply embedded in the culture of Saint Lucia, with numerous matches and tournaments held regularly. Both men and women passionately participate in cricket, making it a central part of community life. Football is another widely enjoyed sport, and it’s common to see children playing football on the streets, showcasing their skills and love for the game. Netball also enjoys significant popularity here. While this sport is relatively unknown in the Netherlands, it can be described as a blend of korfball and basketball and is predominantly played by women. Additionally, athletics, rugby, basketball, and swimming are commonly practiced by the local population, reflecting the island’s diverse sporting interests. These sports not only serve as popular pastimes but also play a key role in bringing the community together and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.

Experience Saint Lucia

BASKETBALL COACH

A basketball coach offers children from the most deprived areas of Saint Lucia the opportunity to play and train in a safe environment. It is your job to transfer your skills and knowledge of the sport to the youth on this island.
Basketball is a popular sport among the youth of Saint Lucia. However, basketball receives little funding from the government and therefore has poorer facilities compared to other popular sports. Basketball clubs and competitions do exist on the island, but there is little attention for youth development. For example, there are only a few youth teams. Female participation in the game is also low. Your focus as a volunteer is therefore to motivate local children and young people to play the sport.

YOUR ROLE

The majority of the training will take place during after-school activities at primary and secondary schools in the poor communities of the island. Together with the local coaches, you will try to get as many children as possible involved in basketball, all with the emphasis on fun first and foremost.
As part of your volunteer work, you will coach various basketball teams to develop their skills and confidence. We are affiliated with local clubs where you will have the opportunity to meet more coaches and players at a higher level. This is your chance to teach a team some tactical knowledge and train them for a league championship.
During training sessions with the local teams, it is up to you to decide how much responsibility you take. Volunteers are usually placed in junior teams. This gives young players the chance to play as part of a team. By introducing the basic principles, you will see them improve their game quickly.
We want volunteers to get involved with the teams and individual players as much as possible. You will receive guidance and support from local coaches. They will also encourage you to take part in training sessions and matches.
Gradually you will be able to implement more and more of your own ideas. You will introduce your own training programs and be able to organize tournaments for your team. However, you should not expect to encounter world-class players. We simply want you to make the game fun and enjoyable while giving the players a sense of security.

RUGBY COACH

Rugby was introduced to Saint Lucia in the early 1970s and has experienced many ups and downs since then. Although Saint Lucia is currently making great efforts to establish itself on the global stage, they have narrowly missed the mark each time.

As a rugby coach, you will work closely with the national team of Saint Lucia and train children from underprivileged neighborhoods. The focus is on participation and enjoyment, giving these children and young people the opportunity to advance in this rapidly growing sport in the Caribbean.

WAT GA JE DOEN?

For the rugby project, it is not necessary to hold any certificates or have completed a (sports) study. You will collaborate with the Saint Lucian RFU and the Saint Lucia Referee Society. These organizations ensure that you work closely with highly experienced players, coaches, physiotherapists, and match officials who can provide you with excellent guidance.

Volunteers have the opportunity to coach at various levels, depending on their experience and personal preferences. When working with youth, the emphasis is on fun and interactive participation, focusing on skill development through games and activities. You can choose to lead sessions or assist with specific activities based on your confidence and comfort level. This is also a fantastic opportunity to scout for potential future national players.

In addition, you can work with the national rugby teams, both male and female, to develop and improve drills and IRB rankings. You will have the chance to contribute to aspects such as gym routines and nutritional advice. There is also the opportunity to design entire training sessions or focus on specific drills and skills.

If the national team participates in a tournament during your stay in Saint Lucia, you may have the chance to go on tour with them—culminating in a Caribbean celebration that you won’t want to miss!

TENNIS COACH

In the past, tennis in Saint Lucia was primarily played by wealthier residents, expats, and tourists. Unfortunately, local people had limited opportunities to engage in the sport. However, with the establishment of a new state-of-the-art National Tennis Center in Beausejour, there are now more opportunities for local players, as our foundation has access to this facility. The rise of talented local stars and the creation of a national tennis league have led to a significant increase in the sport’s popularity among the broader population.

The National Tennis Center boasts six beautiful courts. The tennis association is leveraging the interest of the youth and supporting local communities across the island. As a result, they have decided to incorporate tennis programs into the core curriculum of schools. Through these programs, you have the opportunity to contribute as a tennis coach and help promote the sport in Saint Lucia.

YOUR ROLE

As a tennis coach in Saint Lucia, you will work closely with the Tennis Association to provide training sessions for young people across the island. Most of your time will be spent at the National Tennis Center in Beausejour, but you will also visit schools to deliver tennis lessons to children aged 6 to 11. The primary focus of these sessions is to encourage participation and introduce basic skills and techniques. Many of the schools we partner with are among the most underprivileged on the island, so coaches must be adaptable to the available facilities.

Your role as a tennis coach will vary from session to session as you adjust to the different players and facilities you encounter. At most schools and community centers, you will have the opportunity to lead training sessions, but local staff will always be nearby to support you.

The existing coaching staff will work closely with you, learning useful tips and observing new training techniques, so they can continue to implement your coaching methods after your volunteer period ends.

As a tennis coach, you will also have the chance to use the state-of-the-art facilities at the Tennis Center in Beausejour during your free time. Additionally, we can arrange matches with local players if you want to test your skills and challenge yourself.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE COACH

Frisbee is not yet a well-known sport in Saint Lucia, but it holds great potential to become an emerging sport. Not only is it a popular beach activity, but it is also expected to be included in the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games. Who knows, Saint Lucia might even compete!

Ultimate Frisbee was introduced to Saint Lucia by a former intern from our foundation, so the sport is still in its infancy. The main focus, therefore, is on promoting the sport and ensuring that participants fully understand the rules so that it can be played independently and foster the development of local competitions. During your stay, the team will be there to support you in this process.

While the primary focus of Ultimate Frisbee will be on kindergarten and after-school sessions, there is also an opportunity to combine it with coaching other sports such as rugby, football, tennis, netball, and cricket. Playing Ultimate Frisbee in a safe environment is key to instilling core values in participants and helping them grow, both in their personal development and as athletes and leaders, particularly empowering women in the sport.

Your volunteer week is from Sunday to Thursday. Daily work schedules vary but generally the days are: Preschool session 11:00 – 12:00 then a break for lunch then a school session 13:00 – 15:00 finishing with an after school session 15.15 – 17.00.

FOOTBALL COACH

With the football project in Saint Lucia, you contribute to the grassroots development of football on the island. You will coach children and young people in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods and schools. All participants come from extreme poverty, which brings with it severe challenges. Through the football project, we provide these young people with a positive outlet, helping them stay away from drugs, crime, and the prevalent gang culture. Additionally, you will work closely with popular football clubs on the island, assisting local players in preparing for competitive matches.

Football is becoming increasingly popular in Saint Lucia and is played by both men and women. There are several competitions, including men’s Division One and Two, a women’s national league, local leagues, and various youth competitions.

YOUR ROLE

As a volunteer, you will be an integral part of our coaching staff in Saint Lucia, experiencing firsthand what it’s like to work with the island’s key sports organizations. The primary focus is on training young footballers and developing the sport. You will do this by providing after-school football training sessions to children and young adults. As a football coach, you will collaborate with local trainers and other volunteers to lead these training sessions. Since football is a relatively established sport in Saint Lucia, many of the children you work with will have a natural talent for the game. However, their understanding of the rules, tactics, and strategies will often be underdeveloped. It will be your responsibility to teach this new generation of footballers the rules, provide them with tactical insight, and help them develop their skills.

Your volunteer work is crucial for the development of the sport on the island. It enables local charitable organizations to work with a much broader range of players and to assist in the development of other youth sports on a larger scale.

SWIM COACH

Saint Lucia is an island surrounded by sandy beaches and seas with crystal-clear blue waters. However, many of the residents cannot swim, and sadly, it is not uncommon for children to drown. There is a significant need for swimming lessons in the poorest communities on the island, where many children lack the necessary skills. By teaching disadvantaged children in Saint Lucia how to swim, you are equipping them with potentially life-saving skills. Becoming a swimming instructor is, therefore, an incredibly rewarding experience for both you and the children you teach.

During your time here, you will provide swimming lessons to children aged 6 to 14 in pools and at beaches. There are also opportunities to coach swimmers at a competitive level. However, the primary focus is on teaching basic techniques to children from underprivileged communities, ensuring their safety in both pools and the ocean.

Our swimming project aims to teach as many children as possible to swim, so they can safely enjoy the sea—an essential skill when living on an island. Additionally, we hope to encourage children to refine their newly acquired skills and continue with the sport by joining the local swim team.

YOUR ROLE

During your stay, you will work closely with our qualified staff, who will help you build strong relationships with the children. The swimming instructors will always be there to support you, but you will also have the opportunity to conduct your own swimming lessons. For example, you could introduce one-on-one training sessions. Whether you are training for the first time at the club or taking newcomers to the beach, your contribution to the children’s development will have a lasting impact long after you have returned home.

Please note that the swimming sessions take place in outdoor pools and in the sea, so they are highly susceptible to bad weather. If a swimming lesson is canceled, you can participate in other sports activities in the area or use the free time for personal relaxation.

Accommodation

On Saint Lucia, we have a beautiful villa at our disposal. This accommodation is located near a picturesque Caribbean beach and is situated just outside the vibrant center of the capital, Castries. The villa offers shared rooms, with up to four people per room, so please keep in mind that you will be sharing your space with others.

The villa is home to an international group of volunteers, creating a lively and communal atmosphere. This environment encourages volunteers to bond and often leads to group activities, such as exploring the island together, going on beach outings, or taking trips to nearby islands.

ARRIVAL WEEKENDS

It is highly recommended to join one of the arrival weekends below. These are weekends in which many volunteers/interns arrive at the same time and an introduction, orientation and icebreaker activities take place. In addition, you have the weekend to acclimatize. So it is always better to arrive on one of these Fridays.
An airport pick-up can only be arranged on a Friday. If you arrive earlier, there is always the option to sleep close to the airport for a few days and then use the airport pick-up on Friday.

WHY The power of Sports?

  • No registration fee or deposit.
  • A free intake interview for everyone.
  • Volunteer work abroad is affordable, especially when you consider what you get in return.
  • The only travel organization that focuses entirely on social sports trips.
  • We tell an honest story and assess whether you are suitable for the project.
  • Our programs are carried out responsibly and have a proven positive impact.
  • All our employees are well acquainted with our foreign programs.
  • We offer good personal guidance, both in your home country and abroad.
  • We are founders and part of the ‘volunteer aware’ quality mark. We want to emphasize that our projects are rooted in a sincere dedication to a noble goal.

How experienced do I need to be for my volunteer work?

None of our projects require you to have any certificates or have completed one (sports) study. As a volunteer, you will have a supporting role and you will never be alone. We are not necessarily looking for the next professional, but we want to help children from all social backgrounds to develop socially and build life skills through sports. You give the next generation the opportunity to play sports in a fun and organized environment. So whatever your background and experience, you can be sure that you will make a positive contribution by volunteering as a coach in Saint Lucia.
What is important is that you have a basic knowledge of the rules of the given sport and that you radiate a lot of enthusiasm.

I am a vegetarian. Will my dietary requirements be taken into account?

  • We only provide breakfast in Saint Lucia, but vegetarian options are available.

What do I need to consider when traveling abroad?

  • After our initial conversation, where everything is discussed, you’ll have some time to decide if this adventure is right for you. If you choose to go ahead, we will schedule a second conversation with you, during which we’ll go through the ‘Welcome Pack’ together. This pack contains all the details you need to consider, including what to bring, vaccinations, and other important preparations.

Can I volunteer for less than four weeks?

  • For your personal development, it is best to spend a longer period of time abroad. If you go for less than four weeks, it may feel more like a holiday experience. Therefore, we only offer volunteer opportunities starting from four weeks. To get the most out of your experience, we recommend staying for 12 weeks or longer.

Can I arrive earlier or later than the scheduled arrival weekend?

  • While it is possible to arrive earlier or later, we strongly discourage it. Arriving outside the scheduled weekend means you’ll miss the introduction and orientation, and you’ll be joining an existing, often close-knit group, which can make it more challenging to integrate. However, if you cannot arrive earlier or later, or if there is a significant cost difference in flights, we recommend staying in a hostel for the first few days before moving to our accommodation. Let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist you!

How many other people will I be volunteering with?

  • There will always be other interns or volunteers at the accommodation in Saint Lucia. The group size typically ranges between 10 and 20 people, and they come from various countries. You can contact us to find out how many others will be there during your stay. Additionally, we will create a group chat with others from your country who will be traveling at the same time, so you can get to know each other in advance.
