SCHOOL TRIP | STUDY TRIP SOUTH AFRICA

Experience the incredible passion South Africans have for sport on a school or study trip to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. A school or study trip to South Africa can be one of the most fun and educational experiences to share with your fellow students. You will see with your own eyes how The Power of Sports uses sport for different purposes in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and how sport can bring people together in a divided South Africa. The trip is also mixed with interactive workshops, presentations, outdoor activities and (sports) games with people your own age, so you learn about each other’s culture. And to top it all off, your group can take on a well matched local South African team.

Our school and study trips are always tailor made. By combining competitive sports matches with excellent excursions, we will give your school or study group an incredible sporting and cultural experience.

Community projects

A trip to South Africa would not be complete without helping out at one of our community projects in one of the many disadvantaged township communities. As part of your school or study trip, your group gets the opportunity to teach and coach children and young people from the local township areas. Every group member gets the chance to coach their chosen sport(s) and pass on valuable knowledge to the children. This is a fantastic chance to connect with local people and give something back to the communities your group visits during its stay in South Africa. Expect plenty of singing and dancing from the children as they show their gratitude for your time and effort.

An important part of a successful trip is not only seeing how sport is experienced and played in other countries, but also bonding with people your own age by experiencing a new culture. Throughout the trip your group gets the chance to take part in a range of cultural activities and enjoy everything South Africa has to offer in terms of its beautiful natural surroundings, lively local customs and rich history.

About South Africa and our project

South Africa is a republic at the southern tip of Africa. The country has a rich colonial history in which the Netherlands and Britain, among others, played a role. A major problem in modern South Africa is education. Because of extreme poverty and the aftermath of apartheid, many people still have no access to education, or it is of poor quality.

As a traveller in South Africa you spend your trip in the Eastern Cape, with Port Elizabeth as your base. During your trip you sleep at our foundation’s location and visit our projects in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods (townships) of Port Elizabeth. The foundation uses sport as a tool to tackle social problems in these neighbourhoods. The sports lessons are meant to teach children important competencies such as teamwork, decisiveness and leadership. We also offer children education so they can develop their talents, and we provide education about HIV, AIDS and gender equality. The programme keeps growing. Around 18,000 children already take part in our projects and activities every year!

Where will you be?

All activities take place in the Eastern Cape and you will spend every night in beautiful accommodation in Port Elizabeth (P.E.). P.E. is a city with more than 300,000 inhabitants. This port city is also known as the ‘Windy City’. The name gives it away: this area is ideal for surfing. Three languages are spoken in Port Elizabeth: English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. The city is very lively, though not exactly pretty. The region, on the other hand, is stunning. This is where you can experience the real Africa.

Nick Mould
Tour leader

Nick Mould is half English and half South African, just as he is half footballer and half rugby player. In 2004 he swapped England for South Africa to help less fortunate local people in Port Elizabeth. He has done so successfully, and he loves to talk about it.

Sport in South Africa

Unlike in many other countries, football is not the most popular sport in South Africa. People find rugby even more interesting. South Africans also love boxing, cricket and, yes, football too. Extreme sports such as surfing, abseiling and bungee jumping are also popular. Sadly, the legacy of apartheid is still visible in the sporting world, although this is changing. Rugby is more the sport of the white population, the ‘coloured’ community likes to go to the cricket, and football is the sport of the black population.
