Hiya! I’m Eva, I’m 19 and I went to Saint Lucia for my minor in my third year. I’m studying PMT (psychomotor therapy) and movement pedagogy at university.
How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
I found the support from Holland really good. You’re helped from the very first moment with things like plane tickets, insurance etc. They’re always available for advice. Do bear in mind that you need to take the initiative yourself here. They work on the basis of “no news is good news”, so if you need help or contact, you have to say so yourself. I didn’t have any problems with this, they’re lovely people, every one of them, who want to help each other as much as possible!

In February I started this adventure together with my best friend. Not knowing what was in store for us, we got on the plane. I can still remember that we were SO nervous and excited. Looking back on it now, I would have liked to tell myself that I didn’t need to worry about anything. That I would meet really lovely people who would become my best friends. That I would develop professionally and personally. That over the coming months I would build on my strengths, use what I’m good at and be given the freedom to use those strengths in my own way, wherever and whenever I wanted. I would tell myself that I was going to develop in all sorts of areas. That after a month I would be a football coach (and don’t think for a moment that I can play football), that I would fall in love with a sport I had never done before, and that I would try every sport I came across with all the children, young and old, rich and poor, mainstream and ‘special needs’. I would also tell myself that I REALLY made the right choice of country, it’s a beautiful island with so much to do, such lovely, kind people and a culture to fall in love with! Buuuut I would also say that homesickness comes and goes again, it’s part of it and it’s more than worth it.
Finally, I would want to give myself a hug and tell myself that this really was the trip of my life and that I enjoyed every second of every hour of every day of every week!
What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
Let go of your expectations. Nothing goes the way you expect, and that’s what makes it fun (and a bit scary). Enjoy it! Oh aaand put on sun cream, even if you ‘already have a bit of a tan so it can’t be that bad’
