Short bio
My name is Adrian and I’m 20 years old. I’m currently at college in Utrecht, where I’m doing Sport and Exercise level 4. I wanted to challenge myself by doing an internship abroad, and after a lot of research Saint Lucia turned out to suit me best. I love travelling and stepping out of my comfort zone, and I also enjoy taking up new hobbies as well as existing ones such as golf, fitness and padel.
How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
Before my trip, I found it hard to decide where I actually wanted to go. In the end I came across The Power of Sports and saw how many possibilities there were. I soon got in touch with The Power of Sports and was supported by Ruben. Then together we looked at which location suited me best, which in the end came down to Saint Lucia. Finally, the preparation for my trip was also well organised, because I roughly knew what to expect.

Once I arrived in the Caribbean, I was already really impressed by the island. It was very beautiful, just as I had seen online.
In the first week, though, I did notice that the culture there was different from what I was used to, and that definitely took some getting used to for me, but the longer I was there, the more fun it became. The island is very small, so you can see lots of different places and get to know lots of people. The atmosphere was really good, both in the house where we stayed with the other international students and with the people of the island.
Our work involved leading sports lessons for the children on the island. I spent a lot of time on tennis lessons and swimming lessons. I did this 5 days a week, and afterwards I had plenty of free time left to do fun things/activities. It was lovely to see how grateful the children were when they learnt something new in a sport, but also how much they enjoyed it. They had loads of energy and were very enthusiastic, which motivated me to be really involved during the lessons and do my very best.
Even though I kept busy with both work and enjoying myself on the island with the connections I had made, none of this would have been possible without my supervisor in Saint Lucia, Joel. Joel helped me break the ice on the island, which made my internship experience a great success. We solved any work questions together, but personal things could always be discussed too.
Looking back, this was a fantastic experience, the whole picture of my internship/trip to Saint Lucia was just right, and I would definitely recommend it!

Dare to step out of your comfort zone.
