Internship in Saint Lucia

Outside the resorts, many young people in Saint Lucia have few opportunities to take part in organised sport. As an intern, you’ll use sport as a positive outlet, working alongside the island’s national teams.

Saint Lucia is a small but enchanting tropical island in the Caribbean with a population of around 180,000. Its volcanic landscape features lush rainforests, towering mountains and the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

In the capital, Castries, you’ll find lively markets brimming with spices, fresh fruit and local delicacies. This is where the unique blend of African, French and British influences really comes to life.

Through a range of sports programmes, we teach children and young people about teamwork, decision-making, leadership and communication. One of our key programmes is swimming lessons: many children on the island cannot swim, even though they are surrounded by the ocean. These lessons help to prevent drowning.

Through our Women’s Empowerment programme, we encourage women and girls to take an active part in sport. This helps them to build self-confidence, leadership skills and resilience, and become more actively involved in the community.

As an intern, you will always be assigned the role of sports coach. You will work closely with the national teams and will be able to involve international players in the activities you organise, both in local communities and at the national stadium.

Basketball Rugby Tennis Ultimate Frisbee Football Sailing Swimming

In addition, on some days you can work on your university assignments at the office. This could involve organising a major sporting event, incorporating your own sport into the curriculum, carrying out research or organising a fundraising event. The internship is well suited to sports-related degree programmes, as well as event and leisure management, marketing, and educational, social and cultural studies.

Saint Lucia

This is a volunteering trip, not a holiday. It’s best suited to people who feel at home in simple surroundings and who are coming primarily to make a contribution.

Your goal as an intern is not to train Saint Lucia’s next international, although that could always happen. So you don’t need to be a seasoned coach or hold certificates. A basic knowledge of the sport you coach is useful. But the most important thing is that you show enthusiasm when giving your sessions.

This internship is ideal for sport related courses, but also for event and leisure management, social work, marketing, education and cultural studies. It is important to know that you will always be deployed as a sports coach. In Saint Lucia you can choose to spend some days in the office working on your university or internship assignments. Some fun internship assignments are: setting up a large sports event / adding your own sport to the curriculum / research / setting up a fundraising event.

We can always set up a tailor made internship for you through a personal conversation.

ARRIVAL WEEKENDS

We strongly recommend joining one of the arrival weekends below. On these weekends many volunteers and interns arrive at the same time, and there is an introduction, orientation and icebreaker activities. So it is always better to arrive on one of these Fridays.

It is important that you arrive on a Friday, because an airport pick-up can be arranged then. If you arrive earlier, you can always stay a few days close to the airport and then use the airport pick-up on Friday.

Within walking distance of the beach

In Saint Lucia you stay in a beautiful villa just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, so every day you can enjoy the sun, sand and sea. The villa has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day full of activities. You share your bedroom with one or two other interns or volunteers, a great chance to meet new people and make friends with like minded adventurers from all over the world. The villa is just outside the centre of the capital Castries, a city of 20,000 inhabitants. The location also makes the villa an ideal base for exploring the island, and you can easily take trips to the surrounding sights.

I am a vegetarian. Will my dietary requirements be taken into account?
-In Saint Lucia, only breakfast is covered; vegetarian options are also provided here.

What do I need to bear in mind when travelling abroad?
-Following our no-obligation chat, during which we’ll go through a few things, we’ll also send you the ‘welcome pack’, which sets out in detail everything you need to bear in mind, what you need to bring with you, what to watch out for, and so on.

Can I arrive earlier or later than the designated arrival weekend?
– This is possible but strongly discouraged. Not only will you miss the introduction and orientation, but you’ll also be joining an existing, often close-knit group, and it’s always harder to fit in once the group has already formed. If you really can’t arrive any earlier or later, or if the flight is much cheaper, we’d also recommend staying in a hostel for the first few days before moving into our accommodation. Just let us know – we’d be happy to help!

How many other people will I be doing my internship with?
– There are always other interns/volunteers at the accommodation in Saint Lucia. The size of the group varies between 10 and 20. They do not all come from the UK, but from other countries as well. You can contact us to find out how many others will be there during your stay. We’ll also set up a group chat with other Dutch people who’ll be making the trip at the same time. That way, you can get to know each other in advance.

Sport in Saint Lucia

Several sports are popular in Saint Lucia, at both professional and amateur level. Below is an overview of some of the most popular sports in Saint Lucia:

  1. Cricket: cricket is the most popular sport in Saint Lucia. Players from the island represent the West Indies, and there are various cricket competitions and tournaments on the island.

  2. Football: football is also a popular sport in Saint Lucia, with a national football team that takes part in international matches and competitions.

  3. Basketball: basketball is also played in Saint Lucia, with various local leagues and tournaments.

  4. Athletics: athletics is popular in Saint Lucia, with a number of athletes who have gained international recognition, such as Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred.

  5. Swimming: swimming is popular in Saint Lucia thanks to the warm tropical waters around the island, with various open water races and swimming competitions.

  6. Netball: netball is popular among women in Saint Lucia, with a number of local teams and leagues.

Besides these sports, others are also played, such as volleyball, golf, tennis and martial arts. It is clear that sport is an important part of life in Saint Lucia, where people come together to compete, socialise and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Turing Scheme

Through the Turing Scheme, UK universities, colleges and schools can fund students who take part in a study or internship abroad, including outside Europe. The funding is applied for by your institution, not by you directly.

Ask your study abroad or international office whether your institution takes part and whether our programme qualifies. Visit the Turing Scheme website for the conditions. Make sure you do this well in advance, as institutions work with strict deadlines and gathering the required documents can take a while. A good, timely application also increases your chance of success.

Erasmus+

The UK is rejoining Erasmus+ from the 2027/28 academic year, when it will replace the Turing Scheme. Under general Erasmus+ policy, institutions may use up to 20% of their total budget for placements outside Europe. Your university or college may, however, apply its own stricter policy.

So always check first with your tutor or international office whether your participation qualifies for Erasmus+ or Turing funding. The grant is usually substantial, so it is well worth looking into.

Other grants

Many universities, colleges and sports bodies offer their own travel grants or bursaries for students who want to spend part of their studies or internship abroad. Availability differs per institution and course.

So always check with your course, personal tutor or international office whether your participation in our project qualifies for such a grant. They can also tell you about the conditions, the application procedure and the amount. It is well worth looking into early, as a grant can make a nice contribution to the cost of your experience abroad.
