My story

Hii, I’m Loïs and in June 2025 my adventure began! Thanks to The Power of Sports/Daya Krida (The Power of Sports in Indonesian), I got to make this trip to Semarang. The trips where you really connect with the local people are the ones that stay with you the most, and The Power of Sports makes this possible, because you work together with a team from Indonesia. You learn so much from this team, about the culture for example. It’s so special to be able to experience this so closely. They really make you feel at home, and the people are super sociable and helpful. You do various activities together during the week, but also at weekends. We went to a waterfall together, had lovely Indonesian meals together several times and of course played a game of badminton! During my time in Semarang real friendships formed too, which I’m incredibly grateful for!

Teaching children is what I love doing most, and back home in Holland I’m a teacher too. Teaching in Semarang will always stay with me. I was able to learn a lot in this area as well, and I’m proudly taking this knowledge back to my teaching in Holland. At the start of this school year I actually began a topic on Indonesia with my class back home, which the children found really interesting. My week in Semarang consisted of five days of teaching sports sessions at various schools or in the neighbourhoods.

The enthusiasm with which the children welcome you is something you’ll never forget! You want the whole world for every child, and it’s a lovely feeling to be able to contribute to Daya Krida, because the children really deserve this!

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

I would recommend everyone to grab this special opportunity with both hands, enjoy every moment because time flies when you’re having fun!

Indonesia really feels like a second home to me 🤍 I can’t wait to go back!
