Short bio

I’m Lina, 20 years old, and I’m studying to be a Sport and Exercise Coordinator at CIOS. I’ve been passionate about diving since I was ten, and since the age of eighteen I’ve been doing it at a professional level. I also love climbing and bouldering, but my biggest passion is travelling.

How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?

I was very happy indeed. All the information I received was clear and correct. Whenever I had a question or got stuck on something, Ruben was always ready to help me and replied to my message within minutes.

My story

“It’s incredible that on the other side of the world you meet people who then earn a very special place in your heart, people you will never forget.”

Lina · internship in Indonesia

Last year I decided to do an internship abroad, but I didn’t know where I wanted to go yet. Then I heard about The Power of Sports and got to know Ruben. He told me about his new project in Indonesia, and at that moment I knew straight away that I’d found the perfect internship placement.

After months of waiting and getting everything organised, I was finally able to leave for Indonesia in May, all on my own. Was it nerve-racking? Absolutely! But I also knew everything would be fine and that this would become one of the best periods of my life. And that’s exactly what it turned out to be.

I met the loveliest people there: the Daya Krida team (The Power of Sports in Indonesian) in Indonesia, the staff of The Power of Sports. It’s incredible that on the other side of the world you meet people who then earn a very special place in your heart, people you will never forget.

Beforehand you think you’re going to Indonesia to teach children, to do something for them, to change their lives and to teach them something. But that picture isn’t quite right. Of course you give something to those children, but they give far more back to you, without even realising it.

I can guarantee you: the way you look at life changes completely after an adventure like this. After a few weeks you come back to Holland as a completely different person, a person who from that moment on will think about Indonesia and these special people every day.

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

Say yes to everything! If you get the chance to do something, do it!

It’s completely normal to feel nervous about things, but believe me: everything will be fine.

And don’t take too many clothes, because you won’t wear 80% of what you bring anyway.

And above all, eat loads and loads of soto ayam! 🍜
