My story

For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamt of doing something meaningful for my island, Curaçao. Thanks to The Power of Sports, that dream has not only come true, but it has also enriched my life in an unexpected way. It was an experience that not only gave me a lot of fun, but also taught me a great deal.

During my time as an intern, I got to work with a fantastic team: motivated interns and an internship supervisor I got on really well with. What stayed with me most was the openness and trust they gave me. They gave me the space to bring in my own ideas, to experiment and to let my creativity flourish. That made the work not only fun, but also challenging and educational.

The best thing about this experience was that I could give something back to my own community. Sport turned out to be the perfect way to reach children who have a harder time, whether socially or in terms of motor skills. Through play, movement and teamwork, I saw children not only improve their skills, but above all build self-confidence and have fun. Those smiles, that enthusiasm and those small victories: those are the moments that touched me most.

What I’ll take away above all is that small actions can make a big difference. It wasn’t just about passing on sporting skills, but above all about creating a safe, stimulating environment where every child feels welcome and valued. That experience showed me how powerful volunteering can be, not only for the children, but also for yourself.

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

Be open, be curious and dare to immerse yourself in new cultures. A world full of diversity and special experiences awaits you. With The Power of Sports you get that unique chance, so go for it, let the adventure begin!
