Des heren 3 from Kaatsheuvel takes on the Hungarian national hockey team

Last Saturday, hockey team Des Heren 3 from Kaatsheuvel, who play in the 2^nd class reserve league, took on the Hungarian national hockey team and two other clubs in a tournament. The matches took place in Budapest on the pitch of the Építök sports club.

Initiator and Des heren 3 team member Koen Beenhakker says: “This idea got a bit out of hand. I was given the job of coming up with something for our team outing, but through a good friend I came across the website of The Power of Sports’. I rang them straight away, and in no time at all they came up with a jam-packed programme that seemed too good to be true.

According to Balázs Herberth, coach of the national team and chairman of the Építök club, it was also a successful weekend. The small number of clubs Budapest has are constantly looking for sponsors and professional coaches to improve the quality of hockey. “That’s why this tournament was brilliant! It’s a great way to get new hockey players excited, and it also boosts the club’s funds because The Power of Sports makes a donation to our club. We can’t count on support from the government, because President Orbán has a strong preference for football”.

Hungary doesn’t have any artificial grass hockey pitches yet, so the tournament took place on an artificial grass football pitch. “It took a bit of getting used to, but it was fine!” said Jeroen Brok. All the teams were evenly matched, but in the end the national team came out on top and Des came off worst. That didn’t spoil the fun, because after the tournament gifts were exchanged and there was a big celebration in one of Budapest’s kérts, better known as ruin bars.

If it’s up to me, we’ll take part in the Goulash tournament again next year, but if The Power of Sports comes up with other destinations, we’d like to consider those too. Either way, we’re definitely going on a training camp next year! Best wishes, Jeroen Brok
