Hi, I’m tom! I’m 22 years old and I’m doing my 16-week internship in Saint Lucia. I chose football because that’s my own sport too!

How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?

The support from Holland was really good! At the start I asked Ruben loads of questions and he always answered them really quickly and well. In the past few weeks that I’ve been here I haven’t had a huge amount of contact with Ruben, but if I needed anything I could always message him!

The sport I teach here is football. It’s really interesting to see how things work in another country, and I learn a lot from it myself too! In the morning we’re usually split into different groups, and then you might go to pre school or ‘balata’, for example. There you give a lesson of an hour or sometimes 2 hours and then you head home again. Once you’ve done the morning session, you move on to your own favourite sport, and for me that’s football.

The house is always really sociable too! How many people there are varies a lot from period to period, but usually there are around 15 people in the house. The house itself could do with some updating, but otherwise it’s fine!

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

Be prepared to really stand in front of big groups! Don’t be afraid to use your voice and try to make it as fun as possible for the children!
