I’m Nils and I’m 19. At the moment I’m studying Sport and Movement at Deltion college in Zwolle. I work at camping de Voorst as a gardener, which I’ve been doing for almost 5 years now and I still really enjoy it. In my free time I like meeting up with friends, and you’ll also often find me on the korfball pitch
How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
I was very happy with the support back in Holland. Before you leave you have several conversations with Ruben to prepare you as well as possible for working abroad. You also get the chance to talk to the coordinator who is out there at the time, who can give you even more information about what’s expected of you there and what your working days look like.

On Sunday 4 January I luckily flew out to Curaçao, albeit with quite a long delay. Once we landed at the airport we were picked up by Sem. Because of the situation in Venezuela, the flights of the others had been cancelled. This meant Harm and I had the first week off, so we could explore the island at our leisure. When the rest of our housemates arrived, it didn’t take long before everyone felt completely at home and everyone was heading out together and doing all sorts of fun things. During the internship projects we spent a lot of time teaching primary school children. I found this a really fun experience; you learn loads of new things and you also make lots of new friendships. One of the things I learnt here is that you can put together a really fun PE lesson with very little equipment. We didn’t have much equipment at the schools at all, so you had to be quite creative.
The best part for me was the internship hours at the youth prison. I really enjoyed this because normally you never really come into contact with this group at all. During the lessons all the lads always joined in really well.
Besides the hours you spend on your internship, in your free time you can of course enjoy the lovely beaches. There’s also more than enough to do in the evenings: on Tuesday you can go to Bar P, on Wednesday Madero or Cabana, on Thursday back to Bar P, and on Friday, my favourite, to Wet and Wild.
What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
If you’re in two minds about going abroad and don’t know which country yet, I’d say go to Curaçao. It really is one of the best times of your life.
