My name is Iris, I’m 22 and I’m in the final year of my Sport Studies degree. Alongside my studies I work in a café in Zaandam. I also love being out on the football pitch.

During my internship I worked at various primary schools in Semarang. Together with the Indonesian team we ran the PE lessons. It was brilliant to see how enthusiastic the children became about the lessons and how quickly they grew in their motor skills and self-confidence.
After the lessons we often popped into the warung. There we enjoyed delicious Indonesian food together. It was a lovely moment to look back on the morning together, have a laugh and share experiences.
This internship not only taught me a lot, but also confirmed that working with young people and sport gives me energy. Over the past few weeks I’ve been able to experience what sport does for children from a different living environment. An environment we in Holland might not be used to. This was an experience never to forget!
What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
Be open to new experiences. The culture is different, but that’s exactly what makes it educational and fun. Enjoy the PE lessons, the children and the delicious food.
