Short biography
My name is Nicky, I am 21 years old. I am in my final year at CIOS Hoofddorp, studying Sports, Exercise, and Health. I currently work in healthcare, which I really enjoy. I also love sports and doing fun activities with friends.
Saint Lucia is an amazing island and definitely recommended to visit!
How satisfied were you with the guidance in your home country?
The guidance was very good. There were several online meetings where detailed information was provided about the different countries and what was expected of us. After choosing our country, a specific meeting was organized with all the essential information about that country. We also received clear instructions on what to pay attention to regarding our flight and visa requirements. For any questions, we could always send a message via WhatsApp, and the response was quick. This direct communication was very valuable, especially when we needed information fast. Overall, the guidance in the Netherlands was absolutely excellent.

My story
Together with two good friends, I went on a 6-week internship abroad in Saint Lucia through my school. It was an amazing adventure. When you arrive, you are picked up from the airport and taken to the house where you will stay.
The first weekend was an intro/relaxation weekend. They explain what is expected of you and how things work. You also get a tour of the town and have plenty of time to do groceries or just chill on the beach.
In the mornings, I mainly taught preschool classes. These are children between 3 and 5 years old. We taught them for an hour, and then you prepared yourself for the next session. In the afternoons, we gave swimming lessons in the pool. The children we taught varied in skill level. We had one group that just started swimming and another group that was already competing. The variety was really fun.
On Fridays, you had the day off and an excursion was planned. These activities were often on the other side of the island, so you got to see the whole island. We did some really fun things!
Saint Lucia is an amazing island and definitely worth visiting!
What advice would you give to future interns/volunteers?
Enjoy the time you have there because it flies by!
