Short bio
I’m Rakim Foy and I study Sport Management and Entrepreneurship in Amsterdam. In my free time I’m often kitesurfing, skateboarding and doing other board sports.
How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
The support I received was good. It was clear what was in store for me and I was able to set off well prepared.
My story
“This internship didn’t just give me professional experience, but personal growth too.”
Rakim · internship in Curaçao
My internship in Curaçao was a special experience that I won’t forget in a hurry. It almost felt like coming home, because the culture and atmosphere have a lot in common with my own background in Aruba, yet everything was just that little bit different.
During my internship I worked on Cura Biking Youth, a project that introduced young people aged 12 to 18 to cycling. The aim was not only to teach them how to cycle safely on the road or on a mountain bike trail, but also to show that the bike can be an important way to gain more independence, health and sustainability.
What made this time so valuable was that I didn’t only work with young people, but was also in contact with parents, local sports organisations and schools. I noticed how important sport can be in bringing people together and in making a positive difference to the community.
Alongside my internship I also had the chance to really experience the island. From the colourful streets of Willemstad to the rugged nature along the coast, Curaçao has a unique energy. I went surfing and skateboarding there and, above all, had lots of inspiring conversations with people who are all, in their own way, working to help the island move forward.
This internship didn’t just give me professional experience, but personal growth too. It has strengthened my motivation to keep developing projects in the future that connect sport, sustainability and young people, in the Caribbean and beyond.
What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
There will always be challenges, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the culture abroad. Stay flexible and keep a positive mindset, even though that can be challenging at times. That way you can handle anything.
