I’m Pete, I’m 22 years old and I’m now in my 3rd year of Social Work at college. I’ve been a football fan since I was little, so going to Argentina for my internship was a brilliant experience, because it really is a proper football country. I also love partying with friends and spending quality time with family.

How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?

The support from Holland was good! From the moment I signed up with the organisation until I arrived in Argentina, I was kept well informed about everything. I’m really happy with the support!

This was an experience never to forget. You learn so much about yourself, others, culture and different countries. It’s really wonderful to be part of an organisation like this, you bring so much joy to the children there.

For the children themselves it wasn’t just fun, it was also a way of learning things like teamwork, discipline, how to deal with losing and much more. This time also really changed me as a person. It was the first time I was truly completely on my own. Of course that’s daunting at first, but you soon get used to it. In the end you get to know yourself really well during a time like this, which I hadn’t quite expected. You become more mature, you learn your strengths, but also definitely your weaknesses, which is just as important.

Another big plus for me was the diversity of people you meet on a trip like this. You get to know so many different people, from locals to people from the other side of the world. It’s also really nice that the organisation is very flexible about going on trips. During my time I was able to see a great deal of South America. I’m really happy and grateful for that too.

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

If you ever get the chance to do something like this, you should do it. You grow so much as a person and it’s so good for your development to do something like this. What is really important, though, is that you’re open to everyone. You’re there on your own and you don’t get to choose your friends/housemates, so it’s really important to be open to new people. That’s how you make the best and most fun friends.
