How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?

I’m satisfied with the support we received from Holland. We knew what to expect and exactly what we were going to do there. One point of criticism is arranging a visa. This was supposed to be very easy in South Africa compared with Holland. Unfortunately, that turned out to be rather different. We got hardly any help from UTS South Africa and had to find out everything ourselves. There were quite a few restrictions, and it cost 100 euros and a lot of printing to get everything complete.

Despite all the information you’ve been given, it’s always a case of waiting to see how things turn out once you arrive at your destination: a new country, a different culture, a different climate. Nothing could be further from the truth! We stayed in a great complex where everyone lives together. There are facilities to relax, such as a swimming pool, a pool table and a Wi-Fi room. You get to know new people who become friends for life, of different nationalities, ages and backgrounds. That alone makes the whole experience worth it.

Now for what the whole internship really revolves around: teaching in the townships. This is an amazing experience in itself. Children who are so happy that you come back every day and are so motivated to do sport. As the weeks go by, you can achieve really cool things with them in sport. I can truly recommend this to everyone. You also suddenly feel very humble, because the children are so easily satisfied with very little.

The country itself is also stunning, and you can see the most beautiful sights and do great activities.

I’m Jesse, a fourth-year student at The Hague Academy of Physical Education. My hobbies are football and windsurfing. Over the past four years I’ve built up a passion for teaching, and now I can combine it perfectly with my other passion: sport. That’s the reason I chose United Through Sport. How cool is it to continue your passion with an internship abroad. I’m doing an elective minor internship and have filled it with an internship at UTS.
