How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
I’m very happy with the support I received from Holland. Ruben prepared me really well beforehand, and from the moment I arrived in St. Lucia Joël gave me excellent support. From Holland, Ruben also kept an eye on how I was doing in a nice way. Every now and then we messaged each other to talk about how things were going.
My story
From April to July 2022 I went to Saint Lucia to do my internship abroad. For ten weeks I worked on the (pre-)school programmes, gave swimming lessons and learnt to play rugby.
I had a really great time in Saint Lucia! Before I went to Saint Lucia I actually wanted to do an internship in the United Kingdom, but because of Brexit that sadly wasn’t an option. As luck would have it, in Saint Lucia I lived with lots of Brits! It felt as if I had an internship in both England and Saint Lucia.
I loved being able to give sports lessons to children for ten weeks. It’s wonderful to see them grow, and the feeling you get when even the tiniest ones run up to you with open arms and call you by your name is truly indescribable! For me it was a dream to meet new people, give sports lessons, work with children and at the same time live on a beautiful island!
I learnt an enormous amount from this adventure and I made friends for life here. An experience never to forget!
What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
Don’t be afraid to be brave. Of course it’s nerve-racking to go so far away on your own (or in a small group), but you’ll soon notice that you can definitely handle it! You’ll have an adventure that you’ll miss as soon as you get home! You’ll be brilliantly supported and have a trip you’ll never forget!
