VOLUNTEERING IN CURAÇAO
Curaçao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea and part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the lively streets of Willemstad, the colourful capital, pastel buildings line the streets like paintings. The culture is a unique mix of European, African and Caribbean influences, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Many volunteers feel at home here very quickly.
At the same time, Curaçao faces socio-economic challenges. For many kids on the island, organised sport is not yet within reach. Many children and young people lack structured opportunities to play sport, even though this is so important for their development. That is what we are working on together.
With our sports programmes we offer structured sport and exercise to children and young people on the island. The activities are about fun, but also about personal growth. Through sport we work on important life skills, such as teamwork, self-confidence, dealing with setbacks and respect for others. Because the island is small, there are also great opportunities: talented participants can sometimes even progress to national teams.
As a volunteer you can be placed at various locations. As well as our regular programmes at schools, in after-school programmes and at sports clubs (such as football, rugby, hockey and athletics), there are also projects in special settings such as a youth boarding home, a youth detention centre, an addiction clinic and special needs education. This makes your work varied and meaningful.
You actively help prepare and deliver sports lessons. You receive your schedule in advance, so you know where you are expected. On an average day you are involved in several projects, often working with other volunteers. Together you create inspiring and structured activities, using the sports equipment available.
During the day you travel between different locations, which keeps things lively. Between activities there is often time to relax or explore the island. Many volunteers choose to hire a car together so they can be flexible.
Every week we get together for a team meeting to share experiences and look ahead. These are valuable and enjoyable moments, often combined with a meal together. At weekends you are free and have plenty of time to explore Curaçao further and enjoy everything the island has to offer.
Sport in Curaçao
What will surprise many people is that baseball is the most popular sport in Curaçao. The island has a strong baseball tradition and has produced many talented players who have achieved international success. Football follows closely as the second sport. Curaçao’s national football team has performed well in regional competitions such as the Caribbean Cup in recent years. Local football clubs also have a strong following, and there are several football pitches and facilities on the island. Other sports played in Curaçao include hockey, windsurfing, diving, sailing and cycling.
