Short bio
Hellooo, my name is Kyra and in August 2026 I spent 4 weeks in Nepal. I love discovering the world and new cultures. Asia was still on my wish list, so this trip came along at just the right moment.
How satisfied were you with the support from Holland?
The support from Holland was good. Ruben and Roel are involved throughout the whole process: in the run-up, during and also after the trip. I could go to them with any question, and they always take the time to answer it.
My story
“Together with the local PE teacher, they make sure that Nepali culture and Dutch culture are blended well.”
Kyra · volunteering in Nepal
My 4 weeks in Nepal were short but powerful. The beautiful thing about Nepal is that you’re surrounded by mountains: waking up with mountains beside you and teaching sports lessons with mountains all around you. Really special!
On top of that, it’s all well organised: breakfast things are provided, lunch is at a regular lunch spot and you sort out dinner yourself. There are loads of great places to eat, and it’s many times cheaper than back home!
During the week we laughed so much in the sports lessons with the children. Together with the local PE teacher, they make sure that Nepali culture and Dutch culture are blended well. For example, I learnt new games like ‘kabaddi’ and we introduced the Dutch game ‘schipper mag ik overvaren’. The joy and enthusiasm these children bring only lead to big smiles.
Inside information: the children have their own unique handshake. They love sharing it with new people 🙂
Besides teaching the lessons, there’s also plenty of time to explore the nature and the country. For example, all of us volunteers went on a multi-day hike. Highly recommended! What makes it even better is that Niraj (organiser of the Nepal project) is also an official hiking guide. So he knows all the ins and outs!
In short, highly recommended!

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?
If you feel even the slightest curiosity about going abroad to do sport and physical activity with children, don’t overthink it. Grab that chance with both hands, because it’s worth it.
Personally, I found Nepali harder to remember than Spanish (I had been to Costa Rica before with The Power of Sports). It can be handy to pick up some basics beforehand, perhaps with Duolingo 🙂
