Délano in Curaçao

My story

For my elective minor internship I chose to do an internship in Curaçao with The Power of Sports. There were various learning objectives I had to achieve during the internship.

During my time in Curaçao I taught and led lots of different sports projects, such as PE lessons at primary schools, football and athletics training, and sports sessions at the addiction clinic and the boarding school. During the placement I also gained a lot of experience, in a small group, organising a big sponsored run. I spoke with various people, such as a manager from the FDDK, the National Sports Institute. At the end of the internship I organised a sports day for the whole house together with a fellow student, and it was a great success.

I experienced my stay in Curaçao as a time never to forget. You live together in a house with various interns and volunteers and quickly build a bond with everyone. That’s because you go to the projects together, but on top of that you also spend the whole day together in the house. There was plenty of time to discover the island, so you could do lots of different things together.

Curaçao is a lively island with loads of possibilities: from beautiful beaches to relax on to lots of different parties in the evenings throughout the week. It was exactly this mix of the projects, where you immersed yourself in the culture, and the free time you had that made it a really great combination for me.

The time went by really quickly, and during this period I learnt a lot and had loads of fun with everyone. All in all, I’d really recommend it!

What advice would you like to give future interns and volunteers?

Enjoy every day and don’t be afraid to take the step.

An internship or volunteering abroad is a truly unforgettable experience!
