Wessel

How long did you volunteer?
7 weeks

Short biography
I’m 28 years old and live and work in Eindhoven. I enjoy all kinds of sports, but especially hockey. I love gaining new experiences, being outdoors in nature, and exploring new places and adventures with friends.

It took some energy, but the kids gave back even more with their enthusiasm!

How satisfied were you with the guidance in the Netherlands?
Very satisfied! Ruben was quick and helpful in sharing all the information I needed, both practical details for the trip and useful insights for the volunteer work itself. During the trip, Ruben was always available (although we mostly just sent him fun and envy-inducing photos 😄). In short, the perfect preparation and support.

My story

I really wanted to get away, spend a longer time in a beautiful foreign country, and do volunteer work. All of this came together with De Kracht van Sport. As a bonus, the volunteer work involved sports all day long, and I even got to play hockey myself in South Africa. What a dream!

The volunteer work was very enjoyable and also very flexible. Whenever I wanted to assist at a school, give swimming lessons, or coach a different sport, it was always possible to arrange. It took some energy, but the kids gave back even more with their enthusiasm. It was amazing to be able to give that to the children, and I enjoyed doing it together with others and was lucky to learn from previous volunteers.
The accommodation was great, and sharing meals, sleeping, playing sports, and going out together helped me make friends quickly, which made the experience even more fun. The staff and coordinators made sure all practical matters were taken care of, and the “mama’s” made the experience complete by cooking delicious meals and always being there for a chat and a big hug.

At home, I didn’t really miss anything because there were so many fun things to do and events organized. Every Wednesday evening we played soccer on a small field, and on weekends we went out to Jeffrey’s Bay to surf, skydive, and bungee jump, or to the boulevard to run, swim, or party.

The weeks really flew by, and we became a tight-knit group. As a finale, we joined the South Africa Experience, where we traveled by bus along the Garden Route to Cape Town, enjoying lots of fun on the bus, great activities, and beautiful places along the way. I already miss it!

What advice would you give to future interns/volunteers?

Enjoy every moment and be aware of what a fantastic experience and unique opportunity this is. Keep an open and curious attitude toward everyone you meet,  your fellow volunteers, the staff on site, and of course all the children at the schools and others around you. The locals will make sure you connect with the beautiful African culture, creating some of the most memorable moments and lifelong memories.
