ABOUT INDONESIA

Semarang is a vibrant city on the island of Java, Indonesia, where you can support our project aimed at providing sports lessons to children and young people from disadvantaged neighborhoods (North Semarang) in the sports they love most. In these areas, you are faced with (movement) poverty, where children often have limited access to sports and physical activity. Although they do receive physical education at school, for many of them, it is impossible to participate in structured, high-quality sports after school.

As sports coaches, you have the opportunity to inspire and motivate these children to become active and embrace a healthy lifestyle. By giving lessons in the sports they enjoy most, you can not only improve their physical health but also boost their self-confidence and teach them important life skills.

Our projects are also supported by sports students from the University of Semarang. This makes it easier for you to connect with the children and young people in our programs, and it’s also beneficial for the students to improve their English. Of course, it’s also great to make friends with peers from Semarang.

Semarang itself offers a vibrant and stimulating environment for your internship. With its rich history, cultural landmarks, and friendly community, it is the perfect place to make a difference while also having an unforgettable personal experience.

Poverty is a challenge that many people in Semarang face. Although Semarang is an important economic hub in Central Java, parts of the city—especially the disadvantaged neighborhoods in North Semarang—struggle with severe poverty. Families often lack access to sports facilities.

By working together with local organizations and schools, you can have a positive impact on the lives of these children, while also gaining valuable life lessons and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and limited physical activity, and build a healthier future for the children of Semarang.

Sports in Indonesia

Football is very popular, with a passion comparable to that in European countries. Badminton is a national pride, with Indonesian players often dominating on the international stage. Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art, is practiced both for self-defense and as a cultural expression. Sepak Takraw, a variant of volleyball played with the feet, is also beloved. Surfing attracts many enthusiasts to the country’s beautiful coastline. Indonesia also has a strong tradition of wooden boat races and local variants of polo. This diverse mix of sports reflects the country’s rich culture and varied landscapes.

FOOTBALL COACH

Football has deep roots in the hearts of people around the world, and Indonesia is no exception. The country has a thriving football culture with passionate players, enthusiastic fans and vibrant communities that come together around the game.
With the football project in Indonesia, you contribute to the grassroots development of football in the country. You train children and young people in the most deprived neighborhoods and in schools. Many participants come from disadvantaged backgrounds, so the project offers them a positive outlet, away from potential pitfalls such as drugs, crime and the ‘gang’ culture.

YOUR ROLE

As a volunteer, you will be part of the coaching team in Indonesia. You will work with key sports organisations on the island, focusing on training young footballers and developing the sport. This includes providing after-school football training and leading training sessions in collaboration with local coaches and other volunteers.
As football is already popular in Indonesia, many children have natural talent. However, their understanding of the rules, tactics and strategy may be underdeveloped. Your role is to provide this new generation of footballers with the necessary knowledge, tactical insight and skills development.
Your volunteer work will contribute significantly to the development of the sport in the country, enabling local charities to reach a wider range of players and promoting other youth sports on a larger scale

WEEKEND

During the weekend you are free to go wherever you want, but it is highly recommended to also participate in our (cultural) trips. These trips are meant to get to know the country better and always contribute to the local communities. You will not find these trips in the travel guides, so if you like adventure, these are nice extras of your volunteer work in Indonesia.

RUGBY COACH
Although rugby is still relatively new in Indonesia, the sport is slowly gaining popularity. In recent years, more and more clubs and communities have emerged that embrace the sport and are developing a passion for this physical and strategic team game. This is especially the case in the capital city, Jakarta. In Semarang, where our project is based, rugby is still a completely new sport for many.

With the rugby project in Indonesia, you’ll contribute to building up the sport in the country. You’ll train children and young people in various neighborhoods and schools, often in underprivileged areas. For many participants, rugby offers a unique opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and become part of a close-knit community.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
As a volunteer, you’ll be part of a growing team of rugby coaches in Indonesia. You’ll work with schools and development organizations that are committed to promoting rugby and developing young players. This includes giving after-school rugby training sessions and leading practice sessions, often in collaboration with local coaches and other volunteers.

Since rugby is still relatively unknown in Indonesia, the focus is not only on improving skills but also on introducing the basic rules, tactics, and the culture of the sport. You’ll help players understand the game, develop team spirit, and learn to handle the physical challenges of rugby.

Your volunteer work is essential to the rise of rugby in Indonesia. It helps local organizations promote the sport on a larger scale and reach more children, laying a solid foundation for the growth of rugby in the country. Who knows — you might even be coaching a future Indonesian international.

WEEKEND
During the weekends, you’re free to spend your time as you wish, but we highly recommend joining our (cultural) excursions. These trips offer a chance to experience the rich culture of Indonesia and often support local communities. They are unique experiences not found in regular travel guides and are a great addition to your volunteer work in Indonesia, especially for adventurous volunteers.

BADMINTON COACH
Badminton is not only popular in Indonesia but also one of the country’s most beloved sports. Indonesia has a long and successful history in badminton, with talented players excelling internationally and a community passionate about the game.

With the badminton project in Indonesia, you contribute to the further development of this popular sport. You coach children and young people in various neighborhoods and schools, often in underprivileged areas. For many, badminton offers an opportunity to learn new skills, develop a sense of pride, and be part of a positive environment.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
As a volunteer, you will be part of a growing team of badminton coaches in Indonesia. You will work with local sports organizations committed to promoting badminton and supporting young players. This includes giving after-school training sessions and organizing practice sessions, often in collaboration with local trainers and other volunteers.

Many children already have a natural talent for badminton, but their game understanding, technique, and tactical thinking can be further developed. Your role is to help these young players improve their skills, coach them on the rules and strategy of the game, and motivate them to reach their potential.

Your volunteer work is essential for the continued growth of the sport in Indonesia. It helps local organizations reach more children and provides youth with the opportunity to develop physically and mentally through sport.

WEEKEND
On weekends, you are free to make your own plans, but it is highly recommended to participate in our (cultural) excursions. These trips offer a chance to get to know the country better and often support local communities. They are unique experiences not found in regular travel guides and are a great addition to your stay in Indonesia, especially for adventurous volunteers.

VOLLEYBAL COACH

Volleyball is developing steadily in Indonesia, with increasing interest and involvement. Although the country may not be as strongly associated with volleyball as some other countries, the sport is certainly gaining popularity here, especially among girls.
Local volleyball associations and clubs are actively involved in promoting the sport. They organize training, matches and tournaments, giving both beginners and experienced players the opportunity to develop their skills and participate in competitive events.
A key aspect of the growth of volleyball in Indonesia is the involvement of the youth. Youth programs and school initiatives play a crucial role in introducing young people to the sport and encouraging their participation. Through these programs, children and teenagers can enjoy not only the physical benefits of volleyball, but also the team spirit and social interaction that the sport promotes.
As with other sports in the country, volleyball in Indonesia benefits from international connections. Exchange programs, international tournaments, and participation in regional competitions contribute to the development of the local volleyball community and provide players with the opportunity to compete with teams from around the world.
Although volleyball may not be as widespread as some other sports in Indonesia, the growing interest and commitment of the local population is promising. Volleyball not only provides an opportunity for physical activity, but also contributes to building community and team spirit in the country.

YOUR ROLE

The aim of the volleyball project is also to make the sport attractive to the local population. This is achieved by promoting the sport in schools. Children and young people who show interest can participate in our after-school volleyball training for free and eventually become members of the well-established volleyball clubs in the country.
At the moment, volleyball is mainly popular among girls. By using sports as a means, we offer the opportunity for local residents to play volleyball, a sport that is often considered ‘too expensive’.

OWN SPORT

In recent years, many volunteers have promoted their own sport at our projects. This is not only fun, but also has a great impact, because children are offered a more varied range of sports. The Power of Sport wants to help you with this by introducing these sports. There are many possibilities! In addition, our foundation wants to help you financially to set up this sport.

YOUR ROLE

As a volunteer in Indonesia, you are responsible for supervising all training sessions for young players. The rewards are great because the talent is often there, but knowledge about the rules and structure is lacking. By providing structure and fun training sessions, the players develop quickly. You will receive a lot of support from other volunteers and our local staff/partners.
The training sessions take place five days a week at local schools or on our sports fields. These schools attract children from all over the area, but often receive little sports training or gym lessons. They therefore appreciate it all the more that you, as a volunteer, organize structured exercises and competitions. You will quickly become a well-known figure in the local community and make new friends.
Every day you will provide approximately three hours of training to children and young people between the ages of 6 and 13. These are quite intensive activities, but there is still enough time left to fill your day, such as following Indonesian language lessons.

WHY THE POWER OF SPORTS

  • No registration fee or deposit
  • Everyone get a non-binding intake interview.
  • The project in Indonesia ‘Daya Krida’ (The Power of Sports) was founded by ourselves.
  • As the only travel organization that focuses entirely on social sports trips.
  • We tell an honest story and assess whether you are suitable for the project.
  • Our programs are carried out responsibly and have a proven positive impact.
  • All our employees are well acquainted with our foreign programs.
  • We offer good personal guidance, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
  • We are founders and part of the ‘volunteer aware’ quality mark. We want to emphasize that our projects are rooted in a sincere dedication to a noble goal.

How experienced do I need to be for my volunteer work?

None of our projects require you to have any certificates or have completed one (sports) study. As a volunteer, you will have a supporting role and you will never be alone. We are not necessarily looking for the next top athlete of Indonesia, but we want to help children from all social backgrounds to develop socially and build life skills through sports. You give the next generation the opportunity to play sports in a fun and organized environment. So whatever your background and experience, you can be sure that you will make a positive contribution by volunteering as a trainer in Indonesia.
What is important is that you have a basic knowledge of the rules of the given sport and that you radiate a lot of enthusiasm. It is also not a requirement to be proficient in Indonesian. You can choose to take Indonesian lessons, but fortunately everyone speaks the language of sports!

I’m a vegetarian. Will my dietary preferences be taken into account?
– Yes, as long as you inform us in advance that you are vegetarian, the team in Indonesia can accommodate your dietary needs.

Can I only teach football, rugby, badminton, and volleyball?
– Not at all! In principle, you can teach almost any sport. The project in Indonesia is still in its early stages, so we are actively working on expanding our programs. It might even be a fun opportunity for you to leave your mark by introducing a new sport!

What do the Indonesian language lessons look like?
– The Indonesian lessons take place at our location, every day after dinner. They are taught by a professional teacher and include a total of 20 hours of instruction. If you’d like to take additional lessons, just let us know and we’ll be happy to arrange it for you.

What should I keep in mind when going abroad?
– After our initial no-obligation call, during which many things will already be discussed, we’ll send you a welcome pack. This includes all the important details: what to expect, what to bring, things to be aware of, and much more.

How many other people will I be volunteering with?
– There are always other volunteers or interns staying at the accommodation in Indonesia. Group size usually ranges between 5 and 15 people. Not all of them are from the Netherlands — you’ll also meet people from other countries. You’re welcome to contact us to find out how many others will be there during your stay. We’ll also create a WhatsApp group with other Dutch participants traveling around the same time, so you can connect before departure.
