Short biography
Heyy! My name is Femke, I’m 19 years old and recently graduated from my studies in Sports, Exercise and Lifestyle Coaching. For my internship, I spent two unforgettable months in Semarang (Indonesia), truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! In my free time, you’ll find me at the gym or on the hockey field. I enjoy working in both sports and elderly care!

The memories and lessons I’ve gained will stay with me forever. This experience has only strengthened my passion for sports and working with children.

How satisfied were you with the support in your home country
The support I got before departure was excellent. Everything was clearly explained beforehand, and the conversations gave me a lot of confidence. During my internship in Indonesia, I felt well supported, both by the local team and by the team back home. I’m very satisfied!

My Story

My adventure began with a solo trip to Indonesia. At the airport in Jakarta, I immediately met other students from The Power of Sports, which gave me a warm and familiar feeling. Together, we continued our journey by train, a beautiful six-hour ride through a variety of landscapes, on our way to Semarang!

In Semarang, we received a warm welcome from the Indonesian team and were brought to our accommodation, the Wisma. Since everyone had just arrived, it instantly felt cozy and familiar. That first evening, we enjoyed a delicious Indonesian meal together, nasi goreng, and quickly got to know one another.

During my internship, I led sports and play activities for children from underprivileged neighborhoods. They were incredibly enthusiastic, made heart shapes with their hands, and gave lots of hugs. Sport gave them confidence and brought us together in a beautiful way.

Badminton was very popular, so we often played it with the team.

In the mornings and afternoons, we taught PE at school, and in between we enjoyed local lunches at the Warung. The Indonesian staff team was often present and supported us whenever needed. The team felt like a second family. We laughed a lot and learned about each other’s cultures.

On weekends, we did fun activities like rafting, hiking, playing sports, eating out, going out, and visiting waterfalls, making the adventure complete.

During my time in Indonesia, I had the special opportunity to attend a traditional wedding. Everyone was so warm and friendly. It was a unique experience to witness such an important cultural moment up close.

What I’ve especially learned is how sport connects people, and how important it is to adapt to a different culture. I found it remarkable to see how faith here is a calm and natural part of daily life.

After eight weeks of internship, I travelled around Indonesia. The memories and lessons will stay with me forever. This experience has only strengthened my passion for sport and working with children. I’m going to miss everyone so much, but I know this journey will always have a special place in my heart.

What advice would you give to future interns or volunteers?

Here are some tips I’d love to share with future students:

  • Be open to everything and step out of your comfort zone. Just go for it! You’ll learn a lot about yourself and discover that you can do this too.

  • Learn a few words and phrases in the local language during your stay. It makes communication and teaching so much easier—and more fun!

  • It’s okay to make mistakes and ask questions.

  • Take initiative and learn from the experience.

  • Be flexible!

  • Things don’t always go as planned, but that’s part of the adventure.

  • Be prepared for a bit of culture shock!

  • Don’t forget to take time to rest and take good care of yourself.

  • Connect with the local staff and people around you.

And finally: enjoy every moment, because it will be over before you know it. Traveling and doing an internship far from home is a rollercoaster. It’s okay to feel a little sad sometimes, but don’t forget to enjoy it all! Enjoy your stay, your internship, the kids, the food, the weather, and the new friends you’ll make.

And most importantly: be proud of yourself!
Wishing you the best time ever! 😊
