INTERNSHIP IN NEPAL
Pokhara is a vibrant city in Nepal where you can support our project to give children and young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods sports lessons in the sport they love most. In these areas you are confronted with poverty and a lack of physical activity, where children often have limited access to sport and exercise. The children do get PE lessons at school, but for many it is impossible to take part in good quality, structured sports activities after school.
As a sports coach you have the opportunity to inspire and motivate these children to become active and embrace a healthy lifestyle. By giving lessons in the sport they love most, you can not only improve their physical health, but also boost their self confidence and teach them important life skills.
Our projects are also supported by sports students from local universities in Pokhara. This makes it easier to connect with the children and young people in our programmes, and it is also a chance for the students to brush up their English. And of course it is fun to make friends with people your own age from Pokhara.
Pokhara itself offers a lively and stimulating setting for your internship. With its beautiful location on Phewa Lake, impressive mountains and friendly community, it is the perfect place to make a difference while having an unforgettable experience yourself.
In Pokhara, poverty is a challenge many people face. Although Pokhara is a popular tourist city, some neighbourhoods face considerable poverty. Families often have no access to sports facilities, so children miss out on opportunities to grow up active and healthy.
By working with local organisations and schools, you can have a positive impact on the lives of these children, while learning valuable life lessons yourself and creating memories that last a lifetime. Together we can break the cycle of poverty and inactivity and create a healthier future for the children of Pokhara.

WHO IS THIS INTERNSHIP SUITABLE FOR?
Your goal as an intern is not to train Nepal’s next international top athlete, although of course that could always happen. So you don’t need to be an experienced coach or hold official certificates. A basic knowledge of the sport you will coach is important. What really makes the difference, though, is your enthusiasm and enjoyment in teaching.
This internship fits well with sport related courses, but also with courses such as event and leisure management, marketing, education, and social or cultural studies. It is important to know that you will always be deployed as a sports coach and/or teacher. In Nepal you can also work in the office on some days on your internship or university assignments.
Examples of fun and educational internship assignments are organising a large sports event, integrating your own sport into the curriculum, carrying out research or setting up a fundraising event.
We take your personal wishes into account wherever possible. It is also possible to do research in Nepal. Feel free to contact us to discuss the options together.

ARRIVAL dates
We can pick up interns in Kathmandu at any time.
I am vegetarian. Will my dietary needs be taken into account?
If you let us know in advance that you are vegetarian, they can take this into account in Nepal.
Can I only coach football, basketball and volleyball?
No, in principle you can coach almost any sport. The project in Nepal is still in its early days, so we are busy expanding our programmes. A great way to leave an impact might be to introduce a new sport!
What do my Nepali lessons look like?
The Nepali lessons take place at our location every day after dinner. They are taught by a professional teacher and add up to 20 hours in total. If you would like extra lessons, let us know and we can arrange this for you.
What do I need to think about before going abroad?
After our no-obligation conversation, in which we already cover a lot, we also send you the welcome pack. It sets out in detail everything you need to think about, what to bring, what to watch out for and so on.
How many other people will I be doing my internship with?
There are always other interns and volunteers at the accommodation in Nepal. The group size varies between 5 and 15. Not everyone comes from the UK; they come from other countries too. You can contact us to ask how many others will be there during your stay. We also set up a group chat with other participants travelling in the same period, so you can get to know each other beforehand.
Sport in Nepal
Nepal is a country with a rich culture and a growing sporting culture. Although resources are often limited, sport and exercise play an important role in daily life, especially among young people. Some of the most popular sports in Nepal are:
Football: football is by far the most popular sport in Nepal. It is played in villages, towns and school playgrounds, and has a large following of enthusiastic players and supporters. Both national and international competitions are followed closely.
Cricket: cricket is quickly gaining popularity, especially among young people. The national cricket team is increasingly successful, which has contributed to the growth of the sport across the country.
Volleyball: volleyball is often regarded as Nepal’s national sport. It is accessible, widely played at schools and in communities and popular with both men and women.
Basketball: basketball is especially popular in urban areas and among young people. More and more schools and sports clubs are including the sport in their programmes.
Athletics: running and other athletics disciplines are popular, partly thanks to the mountainous landscape and a strong tradition of endurance.
Traditional martial arts: various traditional martial arts and forms of self defence are practised in Nepal, often linked to cultural and spiritual traditions.
Trekking and mountain sports: thanks to its unique location in the Himalayas, Nepal is world famous for trekking, climbing and mountain sports. These activities are an important part of the active lifestyle of many Nepalis.
Turing Scheme
Through the Turing Scheme, UK universities, colleges and schools can fund students who take part in a study or internship abroad, including outside Europe. The funding is applied for by your institution, not by you directly.
Ask your study abroad or international office whether your institution takes part and whether our programme qualifies. Visit the Turing Scheme website for the conditions. Make sure you do this well in advance, as institutions work with strict deadlines and gathering the required documents can take a while. A good, timely application also increases your chance of success.
Erasmus+
Other grants
Many universities, colleges and sports bodies offer their own travel grants or bursaries for students who want to spend part of their studies or internship abroad. Availability differs per institution and course.
So always check with your course, personal tutor or international office whether your participation in our project qualifies for such a grant. They can also tell you about the conditions, the application procedure and the amount. It is well worth looking into early, as a grant can make a nice contribution to the cost of your experience abroad.
